What Are the Different Types of Breast Implants?
Silicone Breast Implants
Silicone implants are filled with a soft, elastic silicone gel. Two types of silicone gel implants are available: high cohesive gel implants (gummy bear implants) and regular gel implants. Gummy bear implants have a more natural feel and stay intact even if the implant were to rupture. They also maintain their shape better, and ripple formation is minimal to none. Regular gel implants are also a good option.
Saline Breast Implants
Saline breast implants are filled with sterile saltwater. Saline implants can be pre-filled to a size that you have agreed upon during the consultation, or they can be filled by your plastic surgeon during the time of surgery so that minor adjustments can be made to the implant size, should there be a need for it. Saline breast implants are an excellent option because it is easy to reach your desired size.

I chose Dr. Robles as my surgeon for a breast augmentation and I couldn’t be happier with the results. After doing research online, reading reviews, and checking before and after photos, we (my husband and I) scheduled a consultation. The transaxillary and transumbilical incision methods are popular since they do not leave visible scars on the breasts. However, keep in mind that the scars from areolar and inframammary breast augmentation can become virtually unnoticeable with proper care. Dr. Robles works carefully to minimize incision size and visible scarring.
Implant Placement: Above or Below the Muscle?
Saline and silicone gel implants can either be placed above the pectoral muscle or below the pectoral muscle.
Subglandular Placement
Subglandular placement means that the breast implant is positioned above the pectoral muscle and beneath the mammary gland.
This method tends to lead to a faster recovery and more prominent cleavage. Athletes may want to consider this option since the breast implants will not interfere with the pectoral muscle.
Submuscular Placement
Submuscular placement means the breast implant is positioned beneath the mammary gland and pectoral muscle.
This method can lead to a more natural look and feel, especially for women with small breasts. Submuscular placement also reduces the risk of capsular contracture, in which scar tissue develops around the implant that makes the breast feel hard and look misshapen.
Breast Lift with Implants

Pregnancy, nursing, weight loss, and the natural aging process can cause breasts to droop and sag. In such cases, many women undergo a breast lift (mastopexy). However, it is possible to combine a breast lift with saline or silicone implants.
