Otoplasty - Cosmetic Ear Surgery for Kids and Adults
Many are bothered by the appearance of their protruding or overly large ears. Young children especially can feel self-conscious about their ears, and may be subjected to cruel teasing by peers. An otoplasty procedure by Dr. Ramon Robles in Phoenix, AZ, can provide adults and children age four and older with refinements that help the ears look less prominent. With cosmetic ear surgery, the ears can be repositioned and recontoured to improve overall appearance and reduce self-consciousness.
About Otoplasty
Otoplasty is an increasingly popular cosmetic surgery procedure, most commonly performed between the ages of four and 14. This surgery is also pursued by many adults, who say they are tired of hiding their ears behind hairstyles and hats.
Patients often believe their ears are overly large, but in most cases, it is the position of the ears that causes them to look too prominent. An ear pinning procedure can bring the ears closer to the head so they are less conspicuous and appear smaller. If ears are truly oversized, they can be reduced and shaped.
Every patient has a unique anatomical structure and varying cosmetic goals, and Dr. Robles tailors his otoplasty to provide the outcome that benefits you the most. His goal is to provide every patient with a completely natural-looking result, so your ears do not have a ‘pinned’ or abnormal look.
If you or your child are suffering from protruding or disproportionately large ears, Dr. Robles can provide results that look natural and restore confidence.
The Otoplasty Procedure
This outpatient procedure is generally performed in our office and takes about two to three hours. Depending on the age of the patient, general or local anesthesia may be administered to ensure comfort throughout the procedure.
To reposition or reduce protruding ears, Dr. Robles may remove excess tissue from the back of the ear or use internal sutures to realign the ear. In some cases, he may create or increase the antihelical fold at the top of the ear. He can also correct malformations and reduce and recontour earlobe tissue, if desired.
If cartilage is removed and reshaped, front sutures may be used to secure the new structure. In most cases, visible scars from ear surgery will not be a concern. Incisions made on the back surface are placed along the natural crease where the ear meets the head, and If incisions are needed on the front surface, they are hidden within tissue folds.
After surgery, you will receive a head dressing to wear for a week. This will be replaced by a headband that should be worn for several weeks. Strenuous activity must be avoided during the recovery period, which takes about six weeks. Some swelling and discomfort can be expected. However, pain can be easily controlled with medication taken as directed by Dr. Robles.
Once the initial dressing is removed, you will be able to see the results immediately, and your appearance will continue to improve as swelling subsides. The new proportions will provide a more refined appearance and contribute to overall facial harmony and balance.
