Customizing your procedure begins with selecting the type of breast implant. Dr. Robles offers two primary types of breast implants.
Saline Breast Implants
Saline Implant Benefits
- Approved by the FDA in 2000 for use in women over the age of 18.
- Since the implants are filled after placement, they typically require a smaller incision. This also means they can be placed through any incision type.
- Your breast size can be adjusted after treatment, to an extent.
- These implants offer a rounder aesthetic, which some patients prefer.
- Saline implants are the more affordable option.
- The saline material is safely absorbed by the body in the event of a leak. This produces a noticeable difference in breast size, so women are aware that the implant has ruptured.
Considerations
Advances in the materials used for saline implants have made them look more natural than ever. However, they generally look less lifelike than silicone alternatives. This is more noticeable in thin women with small amounts of natural breast tissue.
Silicone Breast Implants
Silicone Implant Benefits
- Approved by the FDA in 2006 for women 22 years of age and older.
- Many women prefer silicone breast implants because they look and feel more like natural breast tissue.
- Silicone breast implants are less likely to result in rippling or wrinkling.
- There are many types of silicone breast implants available. We offer silicone gel implants and gummy bear implants, which produce natural-feeling breasts.
Considerations
- The density of the silicone gel prevents the material from leaking or migrating in the event of a rupture. While this prevents the gel from causing health problems, it also makes it more difficult to detect ruptures. Women need to undergo an MRI to identify a silicone implant rupture.
- Since silicone implants are pre-filled, they require larger incisions. In some cases, larger silicone implants can't be placed through an areolar or transaxillary incision.
Customizing Implant Size and More for Your Body
Profile
The breast implant profile refers to how far the implant projects from the chest wall. Breast implants come in a range of profiles including moderate, moderate plus, high, and ultra-high.
Shape
You can also customize the shape of your breast implants. Round implants offer a fuller overall shape and more dramatic cleavage. Tear-drop implants produce a more natural slope and curvature of the breasts. We may also recommend a breast lift to correct sagging of the natural tissue.
Texture
Patients can also choose between smooth or textured implants. Smooth implants often feel more like natural breast tissue, where textured implants may have a lower chance of capsular contracture, where the tissue around the implant tightens and hardens.
Another Happy Breast Implant Patient
"Dr Robles and his office staff are absolutely amazing!! I got a breast agumentation done and they came out PERFECT! I couldn't be more happy with the results." Melody Diaz
At Robles Plastic Surgery, breast augmentation is not a one-size-fits-all procedure.
Rapid Recovery Surgery
With the rapid recovery technique, patients can recover from breast augmentation after just 24 hours of downtime. In addition, they can resume normal activities like work and going to the gym in just three days. Learn more about this option.

Breast Implant Risks
Rupture
In the event of a rupture, the silicone and saline implants will react differently. A saline implant is likely to deflate and be immediately noticeable. With silicone, however, the material may stay in the breast pocket leaving the patient unaware of the complication. If you decide on silicone gel, be prepared to undergo regular exams in the future to check for rupture and gel migration.
Capsular Contracture
Silicone gel implants are more often associated with capsular contracture. This is a condition where the scar tissue that develops around the breast implant tightens, causing pain or changes in the appearance of the breast.
Maintenance
Both types of implants will require some maintenance. Saline implants will usually need replacement every 10 to 15 years. Silicone implants tend to last longer and need replacement after two decades. It is important to note that neither type of implant will prevent sagging. The natural aging process or weight fluctuation can cause this concern but a breast lift can restore a more youthful appearance.
